Children and adolescents in the Canton of Zug have access to high-quality public schools. Attendance at public schools for the years of compulsory education is free of charge. The compulsory school time of ten years starts with the mandatory year of kindergarten. Often, children join a voluntary year of kindergarten first. The kindergarten is followed by the primary school, which comprises six school years. At the end of primary school, on the threshold to lower secondary level, the educational path splits into different directions.
For children with little or no knowledge of German, there are beginner-lessons: depending on their age, they get 8-10 lessons a week. There's a wide scope for the different developments for children and teenagers. In general, there is a close collaboration between school and parents. Zug also has an integrative school system: children with additional support needs are often integrated into regular classes.
